A REVIEW BY BALTHAZAR MUSIC.

"Blues is easy to play, but hard to feel" Jimi Hendrix once told us and his statement finds itself true in the modern era with the genre being relatively forgotten by the mainstream. Of course, American roots music finds its influence unyielding (packaged in the figures of Dylan and Springsteen who continue to resonate with millions) but Britain has remained ignorant of such ideas.

Thankfully, Falmouth-based duo Smokin' Durrys look to the States rather than local seaside for their inspiration and the result is their debut effort 'Problem Girl'. Sandwiched between angst and nonchalance, there is something bad-ass about the track which begins with a steady dark, pulsating drum beat before a bracing (and disgustingly dirty) crescendo. "Wind your neck in," Ash Caws tells us with vitriol in a tone reminiscent of Jack White.

Smokin' Durrys certainly feel it. The whole thing could have featured seamlessly on an episode of Breaking Bad which is certainly no bad thing. You get a sense that, armed with the right experience, Smokin' Durrys could yet muster up something even dirtier, even greater and even more feral.
